We assist natural products chemists in developing countries through organizing international symposia on the chemical, biological and pharmacological properties of medicinal plants. With each symposium, we also convene a workshop on chemical screening and bioactivity guided fractionation.

With IOCD funds we provide travel grants to younger scientists from developing countries to each symposium and associated workshop. We also award small research grants to several younger scientists from developing countries whom we select from among those we have awarded travel grants.

IOCD/ISDNP Symposium ‘Natural Products: Unlimited Resources for the Development of Drugs, Cosmetics and Food.’, Kasane, Botswana, 24 - 29 February 2008. The first joint symposium between the International Organization for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD) and the International Society for the Development of Natural Products (ISDNP) convened in Kasane, Botswana, in Africa during 24 - 29 February 2008, addressing the theme ‘Natural Products: Unlimited Resources for the Development of Drugs, Cosmetics and Food’.

This symposium brought together a total of 135 scientists from nearly 40 countries, both in Africa and elsewhere in the world, working on African medicinal and other useful plants (food, cosmetics and medicine) and also phytochemists working on malaria, HIV-AIDS, and other diseases relevant to Africa. Nineteen plenary lectures were given by world reknown specialists dealing with selected topics for African plants, as well as with the treatment of diseases found in Africa. Other experts also discussed these same topics in 42 short lectures and 52 poster presentations. The pre-symposium workshop provided young scientist from developing countries hands-on experience with hyphenated techniques GC-MS and HPLC-NMR.

IOCD International Symposium on ‘Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacology and Clinical Studies of Asian Plants’, Surabaya, Indonesia, 9-11 April 2007. This symposium brought together scientists from around the world in academia, public health organizations, and industry. Twelve plenary lectures and special sessions dealt with the current state and future trends in Asian traditional medicine, and implications for the development of new therapeutics. Click here for the conference website, and here for a summary report of the meeting. The collection of abstracts with an author index can be found here (file size: 1.3 Mb).

Symposium on Chemistry, Biological and Pharmacological Properties of Medicinal Plants in the Americas. Held in 2004 in Sao Pedro, Brazil, and cosponsored by IOCD and the Programa Iberoameicano para la Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo (CYTED).

Workshop on Chemistry and Pharmacology of Plants Used in African Traditional Medicine. Held in 2002 in Bamako, Mali.

Symposium on Chemistry and Pharmacology of Asian Plants and Validation of Phytopharmaceuticals. Held as a Satellite Meeting to the Princess Chulabhorn Science Congress in 2000 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Symposium on Chemistry, Biological, and Pharmacological Properties of African Medicinal Plants. Held in 1999 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Symposium on Chemistry, Biological, and Pharmacological Properties of Medicinal Plants from the Americas. Held in 1997 in Panama, and co-sponsored by IOCD and CYTED.

Symposium on Chemistry, Biological, and Pharmacological Properties African Medicinal Plants. Held in 1996 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Prior to the conference, IOCD organized a workshop on bioactivity-guided isolation at laboratories of the University of Zimbabwe. A book was published following the conference: The book that Hostettmann published following the international IOCD symposium on medicinal plants at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, in February 1996 is: Chemistry, Biological and Pharmacological Properties of African Medicinal Plants (K. Hostettmann, F. Chinyanganya, M. Maillard and J. -L. Wolfender, Eds.), 1996, University of Zimbabwe Publications, Harare, Zimbabwe.

It is available in Africa at the price of US$15.00 and in the USA at the price of US$50.00 (plus US$4.00 shipping charges). Checks should be made out to IOCD and sent to
